The Magic of Words

By Kim Lengling
Do you remember the first book you ever read? Or maybe there’s a word you love saying out loud. Words like Hullabaloo or Psithurism. Go ahead, look them up, you won’t be disappointed.
They roll off the tongue and spark our imagination. That’s the beauty and the magic of words.
When woven together in just the right way, words take us places we’ve never been, introduce us to unforgettable characters, and take us on adventures without leaving our favorite chair. That, my friend, is magic.
For me, a book is like a personal movie playing inside your mind. With every chapter, you visualize the scenery, hear the voices, and picture the characters in your own unique way. No two readers imagine the story exactly alike, and that’s part of what makes reading so magical.
A good writer gives you the framework, but your imagination fills in the colors, emotions, and details. One word at a time, you step into forests, cities, oceans, and distant lands. You meet people who make you laugh, cry, cheer, and sometimes even see yourself differently.
For me, one of the best things about reading is connecting with characters. When that happens, I’m thankful there are authors out there who feel their characters and stories so deeply.
Those authors who take the time getting to know their characters; their hopes, flaws, fears, and dreams. Hopefully, by the end of a good book, those characters feel like old friends.
Have you ever finished a book and felt sad turning the final page because you didn’t want to leave the characters behind? Yeah, me too. That is the power of words.
How about when words surprise us in ways we never expect?
Sometimes, a single sentence in a book can bring tears to our eyes because it touches a memory or feeling we had tucked away. Other times, we find ourselves laughing out loud at a character’s comment or a moment so relatable we feel like the writer somehow peeked into our own life.
Words can comfort us when we feel lonely, encourage us when life feels heavy, or remind us we are not the only ones who have faced fear, heartbreak, or uncertainty. They can stir up excitement, curiosity, or even make us stop and think differently about the world around us.

You may open a book expecting a simple story, only to discover something that stays with you long after you turn the final page.
Every reader experiences a story differently, and that’s part of the magic. Reading is a bit like a partnership between the writer and the reader. The writer provides the words, and the reader sees the story.
How cool is that?
I enjoy reading when I am not only entertained, but I learn something as well. Books explore a wide range of things. Lessons that are sometimes obvious, and other times a lesson that quietly settles into our hearts without us even realizing it.
And while technology may have changed how we read and view all of those wonderful words, the magic itself hasn’t changed.
There’s still something special about holding a book in your hands. The feel of the pages, the sound of them turning, even the smell of the paper and ink. Goodness, step into a library and you can feel the magic of all of those words and stories floating in the air!
Whether you prefer printed books, e-readers, or audiobooks, stories and the words that shape them continue to connect us, inspire us, and remind us that imagination has no limits.
So, pick up a book. Let yourself wander into another world. Discover new adventures, valuable lessons, or characters who stay with you for years to come.
Don’t keep that magic to yourself! Share a favorite book with a friend or read to a child. Gift a book to someone who may need encouragement. Stories have a beautiful way of bringing people together.
Sometimes all it takes is well written words and a little magic to begin a brand-new journey.
